Brother Mark Mixon on being Elected Vice President of Recruitment with IFCThis year I have had the privilege of being appointed as the Vice President for Membership of the Interfraternity Council. Despite a close loss in the Presidential race, I have found that my skills and fraternity-related knowledge are being put to much better use in my appointed position.
In this position, I am able to focus on my favorite area of fraternity life: recruitment. This Spring, I worked hard to enforce a truly alcohol-free formal recruitment period, and found much success. However, it must be said that the success is due more to the hard work and dedication of the chapters than anything myself or IFC did. Overall bid acceptance increased significantly as chapters began to believe
and see first hand that alcohol-free, values-based recruitment is a vital aspect to improving fraternity life. And there is much more to come this fall!
Beyond my work on recruitment, I have collaborated with other Executives in cracking down on hazing in our community. Our ability to discover--and
anonymously adjudicate--cases of hazing has increased new members', brothers', and parents' willingness to report known violations. I am proud to have the opportunity to extend Sigma Nu's anti-hazing traditions beyond our own chapter walls to the entire IFC community.
My goals as the semester progresses include continuing to build a firm, dedicated stance against hazing at Penn State, and continue to show that alcohol drastically hinders a chapters ability to recruit quality new members. This fall, I hope to see at least a 25% increase in fall recruitment numbers, ideally reaching at least 750 initiated new members.

After a couple of false starts, one earlier missed deadline, and some
last-minute quality-control efforts by the contractor...I am thrilled
to report that the second major capital improvement project funded by
the Capital Campaign was successfully completed during the recent
holiday break. Complete Floor Covering was the flooring contractor,
and Charles Ulsh of Ulsh Home Improvements completed the associated
trim work and painting.
This project was the result of a strong team effort, with special
thanks to the Property Association Board and the following
individuals: Bob Nelson for his leadership in guiding the Property
Association Board discussions during the design and bidding process
and Ed Sidwell for his daily construction observation on-site during
the installation. Please see the additional photos by clicking on the
"photo albums" link near the top of the page on the left, and then select
the "Building a New Legacy Capital Campaign Flooring Project" photo album.
Brothers returning for the Spring Semester were instructed on the care
and maintenance of the floor as part of the 'Clean Start' seminar held
on January 17. Keeping the floors in top shape will obviously be an
ongoing effort, and the Chapter is committed to do so. Special thanks
again to Ed Sidwell and Kelly and Brandon Peterson for helping to
reinforce this message.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates as the Property Association
begins discussions on the next round of capital improvements...and
keep those donations coming!
To make your donation, please contact Brother Doug Kosydar at DD1249@gmail.com
as it is never too late to invest in your home in State College.

There were reports he was captured but never found and he is officially listed as an MIA. His Penn State class ring was found by a villager in Thailand and returned to Brother Lew's family at the ceremony. Brother Lew was a really fine person and a credit to the brotherhood.
