64th Grand Chapter Update - Boston MA

The celebration of Sigma Nu at the 64th Grand Chapter over Independence weekend was a spectacular event in Boston. This was the first Grand Chapter in Boston, with the city selected by Regent Joe Gilman because he fell in love with the city when attending MIT for graduate school. As you well know, Boston boasts one of the most magnificent fireworks shows including the legendary Boston Pops. The 500 Brothers and guests were in for a really great show!

Grand Chapter however is not all play; even though we did have great food and wonderful accommodations at the Sheraton, the same hotel that two days after we all left the National Governor’s Association rolled into.

But in all seriousness some heavy topics were discussed. The Grand Chapter voted to increase the Initiate Dues, the fee paid semesterly by collegiate Brothers, by $15 annually. The Grand Chapter approved a resolution to initiate as a Knight a member posthumously after a series of events where he died tragically before his colony gained its charter. The Grand Chapter also elected our current High Council.

The latest High Council is heavily comprised of Brothers from large southern chapters. This was in part due to the elections and the appointment of four collegiate grand councilmen. It will be interesting to see what happens this biennium.

As part of his speech, the new Regent, Robert Durham, appointed a Task Force to collect and educate us on the Best Practices across collegiate and alumni operations. He is starting his term off to a promising start.

For those that missed this year’s Grand Chapter can start planning for Grand Chapter 2012, the 65th Grand Chapter. Mark your calendars for July 7-12, 2012 in downtown Dallas TX at the Hilton.

Thank you to our collegiate representatives Blake Bonnewell, Mark Mixon, and Phil Meier. Our alumni chapter was represented by Andy Hackett. For questions about Grand Chapter or the General Fraternity we encourage you to reach out to Andy at aph127@psualum.com.

Class of 1960 Meet in State College to Celebrate their 50th Reunion

Sigma Nu Brothers and their wives from left to right:  Bill/Elaine Cave, David/Joan Cotterill, Gary/Jane Pauline, Chick/Joan Rolling.

The Traditional Reunion weekend in early June provided an opportunity for brothers Bill Cave, David Cotterill, Gary Pauline, Chick Rolling and their wives to reconnect after 50 years. Sharing a luncheon at Toftrees, the group reminisced and re-told stories of the 'good old days', as well as bringing each other up-to-date on family, classmates and current activities. Part of a close-knit brotherhood in the 1960 era, we were reminded of some great times together with only a few of the forgettable variety.

House parties like Dock/Viking were recalled, but the most enjoyed were the formal ones with the guys in tuxes, gals in ballroom gowns and the house decorated to match the occasion. Who would think, now, that chaperones, dorm/house rules, curfews or a dress code for nightly dinner would be a "good thing", but that was the collective opinion of our group.

We were also reminded of brothers lost in the past few years--Jack Nehls, Gerry Murphy--and, more recently, Russ McCarron.

The central link to these memories is Delta Delta of Sigma Nu. For us that time together was special and we retain only the best of that experience, as the luncheon proved--a good time was had by all!!"

First Floor Renovation Project - New Lighting

The Delta Delta Chapter Property Association is pleased to announce that the Lighting Phase of the First Floor Renovation Project has been completed in time for our Annual Arts Fest Celebration to be held at the Chapter house on Saturday July 10, 2010.

New lights were installed in the Foyer, Dining Room, and Chapter Room on the first floor of the Chapter house.

A special thank you goes out to the following individuals for their efforts.

Brandon Peterson - Brandon was the Project Manager for this renovation and was responsible for obtaining the light fixtures as well as securing several bids for and the scheduling of the electrical work.

Ed Sidwell - Ed continues to be our local contact for all Property Association activities.  Ed also continues to be one of the main photographers to document the work of our Chapter.

Steve Rodrigo -  Steve made an additional financial donation to help cover the costs of this project.

Mike Virag - Mike, a VP at Lithonia Lighting, was able to provide the lighting fixtures at cost.

Jim and Susan Shincovich - Jim and Susan generously donated their chandelier to be hung in the Foyer.  This beautiful piece can be seen from across the street through the front window of the Chapter house.

Bob Nelson - Bob continues to manage the budget in a very efficient manner and was able to allocate a majority of the funds from our annual operating budget.

Additional Photos of this renovation phase can be viewed inside the "First Floor Lighting" photo album on the website or by clicking here.

2010 Delta Delta Golf Invitational

The 2010 Delta Delta Golf Invitational was won by the team of Dan Roberts and Kris Heineman.  This dynamic duo shot a one over par 73 on the Penn State White Course to take home the "Cup".  Active Chapter Brother Mark Mixon won the longest drive competition and Brother Brandon Peterson won the prize for the longest putt.

This years outing also saw three members of the Active Chapter take part as well as the return of Team Dynasty (Brothers Bain and O'Donnel).

In the hopes of gaining more momentum for our Chapter, those Brothers that attended the dinner voted to make this annual golf outing into something much bigger by inviting significant others to attend as well as to organize an event for those that do not golf.

Possible events that were discussed included a local winery tour, trout fishing excursion, or a PSU campus tour led by a Lion Ambassador.  All guests will then meet up for a dinner reception that evening.  More information will be sent out as additional plans are made.  The current tentative date for this event is Saturday June 11, 2011.

To view several photos for this event, please click on the Photo Albums link and select the 2010 Sigma Nu Delta Delta Invitational photo album, or click here

I am looking forward to the 2011 Invitational in the hopes that we can grow this annual Chapter event.  If you would like to help organize the 2011 event or have any suggestions on how to attract more Brothers to participate, please contact me at DD1249@gmail.com .

Doug Kosydar ΔΔ1249

Volunteer Needed for Marketing

Our Alumni Chapter is in need of a volunteer to lead our Marketing Program.

The main duties will include working with our Account Rep with Affinity Connection to manage and administer our website and produce our bi-annual newsletters.

This is a great chance to get involved with our organization.   It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet and work with our Alumni Brothers while reconnecting them to our Chapter of the Legion of Honor.

Time commitment is roughly 2 hours a month.

Please contact me at DD1249@gmail.com if you are interested in helping out or if you have any questions about this opportunity.

LTH,
Doug Kosydar ΔΔ1249
